Why Staying Hydrated Matters During Hot Weather

Well… that escalated quickly, didn’t it?!
One minute we were all complaining about the rain, and the next we were absolutely melting over the bank holiday weekend.
I was down in Cornwall competing over the weekend, which meant one thing: I was hella sweaty. Like properly sweaty. Between training, competing, travelling, and being out in the heat all day, extra hydration (and I mean more than usual) was absolutely essential!
At MOOV Chiropractic, I often see people feeling stiffer, more fatigued, and struggling with recovery during periods of hot weather. And honestly? Hydration is one of those things we all know we should be better at… but most of us still don’t drink enough... (tutt tutt)
If you know me personally, you’ll know I am emotionally attached to my water bottle.
Ice cold water only.
Straw essential.
Bottle permanently attached to me like an extra limb.
In fact, you genuinely won’t see me without it.
Hydration suddenly becomes a lot easier when you actually enjoy drinking your water. So if a fancy emotional-support water bottle helps - I fully support it. (I will grant any excuse to enter HomeSense to browse for a new bottle!)
Why hydration actually matters
When the weather gets hotter, we lose more fluids through sweat - even if we’re not exercising.
But if you’re training, walking more, travelling, sitting in traffic, or just generally existing in this unexpected UK heatwave, your body is working overtime to regulate your temperature.
And when hydration drops, we often notice:
Headaches
Fatigue
Dizziness
Muscle cramps
Stiffness and joint aches
Brain fog
Reduced concentration
Feeling generally sluggish
As Chiropractors, we also see hydration impacting muscle tension, recovery, and overall performance. Your muscles, joints, discs, and connective tissues all function better when properly hydrated.
Think of water as oil for the body! Everything moves better with enough of it!!!
Hydration and muscle recovery
Hydration plays a huge role in recovery. Whether you’re training hard, competing, going to the gym, or simply surviving the warmer weather.
Dehydration can contribute to:
Increased muscle tightness
Slower recovery
More aches and pains
Increased fatigue
Reduced athletic performance
After competing in Cornwall over the weekend, I definitely noticed how much more water my body needed compared to a normal week.
For athletes and active people especially, staying hydrated is one of the simplest ways to support muscle recovery and reduce unnecessary tension or further complications.
The caffeine and alcohol conversation…
Now this is the part nobody wants to hear.
Caffeine and alcohol = minus points.
Both have anti-diuretic effects, meaning they encourage your body to lose more fluid. So if you’re smashing iced coffees, Aperol spritzes, or pub garden pints in the sunshine, you’ll need to increase your water intake even more.
And before anyone says it…
No — the water in your tea or coffee does not count towards your hydration goals...
Sorry! I don’t make the rules!
The body still needs proper hydration in its purest form: good old-fashioned water.
Simple ways to drink more water
A few easy hydration tips that genuinely help:
Carry a water bottle everywhere
Use a straw bottle (game changer)
Keep your water ice cold (game changer x2)
Add electrolytes if you’re sweating heavily
Drink before you feel thirsty
Aim to refill your bottle multiple times a day
Match every coffee or alcoholic drink with extra water
Your body will thank you for it x
Final thoughts

The hot weather is lovely… for approximately the first 14 minutes.
But whether you’re training, working, travelling, competing, chasing children around, or simply trying to survive a British heatwave without melting into the pavement, hydration matters more than most people realise.
So this is your reminder to go fill up your emotional-support water bottle, embrace the Homesense browse, and drink some actual water today!!!
Your brain, spine, muscles, energy levels, and recovery will all be happier for it.
If you’re struggling with tension, stiffness, recovery, or feeling run down at MOOV Chiropractic, I am here to help.
